PML Energy AB is a Swedish company specializing in geothermal drilling, offering cutting-edge solutions for geothermal energy projects. With our patented vacuum drilling technology (VDT), we aim to meet the increasing demand for renewable energy by providing advanced drilling technology and services that enable clean, reliable, and sustainable geothermal heat and power generation.
Geothermal Energy: A Renewable and Sustainable Energy Source
The Earth’s core is extremely hot, and this can be explained mainly by four factors:
- Heat from the Earth’s formation
- Gravitational pressure
- Radioactive decay
- The solidification of the Earth’s core
These factors cause temperatures in the Earth’s core to reach up to 6,000°C. This heat, which spreads to varying degrees toward the Earth’s surface depending on the location, can be used as a renewable energy source.
Geothermal Energy
To harness geothermal energy, drilling is conducted into the Earth’s crust to access the heat, which can then be used to produce electricity and heating. Different geological conditions affect the availability and costs. For example, in Iceland, drilling does not need to be very deep to reach high temperatures, whereas in Sweden, significantly deeper drilling is required.
Geothermal energy is an environmentally friendly and reliable energy source that is not affected by weather conditions, unlike solar and wind power. It does not emit greenhouse gases and requires no fuel costs. This allows operational costs to remain low and stable.
Geothermal energy is thus an attractive alternative, as it can reduce dependence on fossil fuels and contribute to lower emissions and costs. It is also a safe and stable energy source that can provide continuous energy around the clock.
Challenges
When drilling deep boreholes over 500 meters, there are two major challenges: recovering the drill cuttings and managing water flows. Traditional methods for handling drill cuttings use high-pressure air, but this becomes increasingly difficult at greater depths. Overcoming these challenges can be costly and time-consuming, as well as create unsafe working conditions. Geothermal energy projects, therefore, face significant barriers to large-scale implementation due to high initial costs and technical difficulties.
Our Solution
PML Energy’s patented drilling method, called Vacuum Drilling Technology (VDT), addresses these challenges:
- The ability to recover drill cuttings in a closed system
- Management of water flows
In conventional methods, high-pressure air is used through the drill bit to lift the cuttings, but the deeper the drilling, the harder this becomes. The VDT technology consists of a closed system that combines compressed air from the drill bit with vacuum suction at the top. The drill cuttings and water are effectively extracted while maintaining negative pressure.
The method also allows for dust-free drilling as it occurs in a closed system.
The advantages of the VDT method can be summarized as follows:
- Drills at least 50% faster than conventional methods, significantly reducing costs.
- Uses less energy compared to traditional drilling methods, lowering costs and reducing carbon emissions.
- Reaches greater depths and higher temperatures, contributing to further cost reductions.
- Enables geothermal energy in locations where other methods do not work (limited space, difficult geological conditions, etc.), providing savings for those relying on more expensive heating or cooling alternatives.
- Drills in a more environmentally friendly way, reducing costs and improving working conditions.
Benefits of the VDT Method:
- Enables geothermal energy extraction where it was previously impossible or very costly.
- Drilling speed of 36 meters per hour compared to 1-2 meters per hour with conventional drilling technology.
- Cleaner, faster, and more efficient drilling with significant cost savings.
- Drilling with underpressure down to -0.9 bar and a high capacity of 11,000 cubic meters per hour.
Technical Description: Integrated vacuum technology improves performance and makes costs more manageable. Unique components and processes enhance efficiency in handling drill cuttings in a closed system.
Applications and Potential: The new drilling technology opens up new markets for geothermal energy by making it economically viable. This reduces environmental impact by providing stable, renewable energy around the clock.
Conclusion: In summary, the patented drilling technology offers significant advantages and potential within geothermal energy. Interest and collaboration are encouraged for continued development.
Calculation Example for Drilling Speed:
- Previous drilling speed: 1-2 meters per hour.
- New drilling speed: 36 meters per hour.
Difference in speed: 36 meters/hour – 1.5 meters/hour = 34.5 meters/hour
To calculate the percentage difference: (34.5 meters/hour) / (1.5 meters/hour) = 23 times faster
